Pilates

Pilates is a mindful movement technique that focuses on core strength. What is the core? The small stabilizing muscles closest to the skeleton are the muscles that constitute our core. These muscles are highly efficient, and do not require a lot of energy to engage. When these muscles are turned on, our bodies are better supported, more stable, and possibly a little bit taller. When these muscles forget how to work, this is when injury and chronic pain tend to happen.

With Pilates-based exercise, we learn how to engage the core musculature to create safer movement that maintains joints in their ideal alignment.

The equipment you’ll see at SuperHuman is the Pilates reformer which utilizes a set of springs to both resist AND assist through movement in all of the planes of motion. This creates a balanced approach to exercise and will help you to maximize your mobility, strength, flexibility, and body awareness. This is how we heal injuries, and prevent them from coming back!

Yoga

Yoga asana has been around for quite some time now, and was designed as the physical component of the yogi lifestyle. At SuperHuman, we’re not going to take the entire 8-fold path, but we are going to use Asana (poses) to become more aware of our bodies.

When used properly, yoga is excellent for building strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, endurance, and sense of humor. Yoga also utilizes the breath in order to keep our bodies in a calm state so we can stay tuned in as we move.

Kara Strauss is a registered yoga teacher, and has been teaching classes, private sessions, and as a part of her physical therapy practice for many years.

Yoga may be utilized as a part of a physical therapy program, or as a private movement session.

Aerial Dance

Kara has been practicing aerial dance for over a decade. While she isn’t quite ready to run away with the circus, she is uniquely qualified to understand and treat the aerialist community. She understands the requirements, needs, and mild obsession of these dedicated athletes.

SuperHuman Therapy is located across the hall from Challenge Aerial Studio, and if we need to pop over to review alignment in a particular movement, we have that option!

Aerial dance is technically any type of dance that incorporates aerial apparatus. From the silks, to the trapeze, to the ropes and sling. If it’s up in the air - it’s aerial.

For some of our patients, the aerial apparatus also provides an excellent opportunity to improve our body awareness (interoception and proprioception) in a very new and exciting way.
